This jewelry is made from a plate made purely of Urushi(traditional Japanese lacquer). One layer of Urushi is applied to the glass plate, the next day the hardened coating is lightly polished, and another layer of Urushi is applied. This process is repeated daily, and when the Urushi is several millimeters thick, it is removed from the glass plate. For this piece, 170 to 180 layers of Urushi were applied, and then the piece was engraved. Through this work, I attempt to visualize the enormous amount of time that went into the formation of the piece by means of a bold, diagonally cut design. When light reflects off the work, stacked lines appear, like the sides of a book, and various colors of lacquer form patterns and gradations on the work. My hope is that by wearing this work, we can visualize the weight of time, something invisible.
